Global Algae Innovations, with headquarters in San Diego, California, and cultivation/production facilities in Lihue, Hawaii, have introduced a new algae harvesting system using advanced membranes to achieve what they claim is 100% harvest efficiency, eliminating the need for secondary dewatering.

The patent pending technology attains up to 15-20% concentrate in primary harvesting with a “crystal clear permeate” that is 10 times lower turbidity than U.S. drinking water standards. Operation has been validated for many classes of algae including diatoms, green algae, cyanobacteria, and red algae. The automated system is easy to operate, and algae are harvested at ambient pressure without exposure to high centrifugal forces or shear. The scalable system is available in sizes from 5 gpm to 200,000 gpm.

Global Algae Innovations has leveraged advances in large-scale algae production along with a systems approach and a detailed techno-economic model to develop innovations throughout the entire process. They are demonstrating these advances in their operation that includes one of the world’s largest open pond raceways and the world’s only large-scale open raceway facility utilizing power plant flue gas as the sole carbon dioxide source.

These advances achieve improvements over conventional technology, according to the company, in areas including:

  • Raceway Design: Scalable for 100x reduction in number of raceways — lower energy with 10x reduction in volumetric flow ~ 2x higher productivity
  • Harvest & Dewatering: 30x reduction in harvest and dewatering energy — 100% harvest efficiency with crystal clear recycled water — 4x reduction in flow
  • CO2 supply: 15x cost reduction — 70x reduction in energy use — 15x increase in capture efficiency — proven operation on power plant flue gas
  • Inoculation: 4000x reduction in inoculum volume through contamination control
  • Drying: 10x reduction in energy use
