Witt Targets Algae Nutrient Gas Market

Witt-gas, the German-based company specializing in gas control systems has announced their increased focus on adapting their suite of products and services to the algae cultivation market, with a focus on blending and delivering nutrient gas streams.

Founded by Paul Witt in 1945 to build flashback arrestors, WITT began to manufacture gas mixers for the production of shielding gases for welding and furnace atmospheres in 1969. Their current product line includes portable mixing, metering and gas analyzing units, electronic control and readout systems, as well as complex processing equipment, and distribution and support in over 60 countries.

Since 2010, Witt had seen a rise in demand for gas control systems for algal cultivation, from Germany as well as abroad, and has been working with algae producers and scientists to make the gas-driven portion of the manufacturing process more efficient. Seeing the central role that carbon dioxide played in accelerating the growth of algae, Witt engineers began to develop instrumentation for precise dosing and analyzing the gases in artificial cultivation.

“Nutrients, heat and CO2 are the only preconditions. If these are perfectly combined, algae grow up to 20 times faster than land plants,” says Witt’s Martin Bender.

The department Bender leads designs the entire gas installation technology for clients. “These include mixing, dosing and control systems as well as analyzers and safety equipment. This is advisable for safety reasons and it also simplifies approval processes for the operator, whether controlling the process locally, or by remote via Intranet, Internet or mobile devices such as PDA’s or mobile phones.”

In the United States, Witt-gas is distributed by Witt Gas Controls LP of
Alpharetta, GA.
