2009’s Best Science Book award winner, Mark Edwards, will begin a 20-part primer in understanding the basics and current state of algae biofuels to appear in www.algaeindustrymagazine.com. The series begins Thursday, April 15, and a new installment will be posted biweekly.

Algae 101 is designed for both industry professionals looking to fill out their understanding of the broad spectrum of the industry’s issues, as well as for the newcomer to the industry looking to acquire a foundation of knowledge in the field.

Among the topics presented in the series will be:

  1. What has held back the algal industry?
  2. What are the politics of the algae industry?
  3. How does strain selection work?
  4. How do we culture algae?
  5. Open ponds or containers?
  6. What are the key obstacles to scale up?
  7. How do we recognize and eliminate contaminants?
  8. What are the key growth metrics?

  10. How do we minimize energy inputs?
  11. How do we harvest the algae?
  12. How do we separate co-products in the algal biomass?

Author Mark Edwards graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy with degrees in mechanical engineering, oceanography and meteorology. He earned an MBA and PhD in marketing and consumer behavior and has taught strategic marketing, sustainability, leadership and entrepreneurship at Arizona State University since 1978 in the W.P. Carey School of Business.

Mark’s award-winning books in the Green Algae Strategy Series focus on sustainable and affordable food and energy (SAFE) production. His books are being used in colleges, universities and institutes in over a dozen countries for courses in biology, botany, biotechnology, sustainability, energy engineering, world future and global hunger.
