Isolating Algal Species

Dr. Brad Elder’s algae research team at Nebraska’s Doane College created this video, featuring undergraduate researchers Ryan Corrigan and Jeff Hawken, to illustrate a method of isolating different algal species from large diverse populations of algae. The growth medium resists bacteria and fungal growth, and will stop some algae from growing. It may be necessary to repeat the isolation step, as it is unlikely to get nicely separated colonies on the first try.
