IEEE Algae Taste Test

While working on a special report about potential climate-saving technologies, IEEE Spectrum staff decided to grow Spirulina in a five-gallon plastic bucket in a back room of their New York City office over the course of six weeks. Their point was not only to explore algae’s ability to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and serve as a source of vegetable protein, but also to figure out whether anyone would actually eat the stuff. Here’s their story.
