Syed Isa reports that The European Algae Biomass Conference at The Centre of Management Europe in Brussels, November 29-30, was an intense, exciting and wonderful two-day event, thanks to the hospitality and arrangements by the EABA Executive Director, Raffaelo Garofalo, and assisted by Chiara Zanasi.

More than 100 participants attended, primarily from European nations, and with a strong showing from Russia. The meeting concentrated on biomass production from algae, and finished with a session on algae biomass held at the European Parliament.

The event highlighted many different angles of algae sector developments, mostly on research funded by the FP7 and other European concerns. Among the most interesting presentations was one by H.E. Manish Uprety, IMMSAM representative based in London, who talked about spirulina to help the world’s malnutrition and hunger problems going into the future.

There was undeniably a strong presence at the event from the EU Commission, suggesting how important algae have become to the future of Europe.
