BETO ups algae focus for 2016

BETO2016The U.S. Department of Energy’s Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO) has announced the 2016 update of the BETO Multi-Year Program Plan (MYPP), reflecting a non-specific increase in the attention toward algal biofuels.

  • BETO’s “Algal Feedstocks Research and Development” program area has been renamed “Advanced Algal Systems Research and Development” to emphasize the entire algal biofuels supply chain.
  • This section also includes a new Algae Farm Design Case with technical targets for algal biomass production costs through open pond cultivation systems. Design cases are peer reviewed techno-economic analyses that underpin BETO technical targets and cost goals. BETO’s portfolio also focuses on other algae cultivation systems, such as attached growth systems, and closed photobioreactors.
  • The MYPP serves as an operational guide to help BETO manage and coordinate its activities as well as a vehicle to communicate BETO’s mission, goals, and plans to stakeholders and the public. It details BETO’s research, development, demonstration, market transformation, and crosscutting activities for the coming years.
  • BETO’s Algae Program is carrying out a long-term applied research and development strategy to increase the yields and lower the costs of algal biofuels by working with partners to develop new technologies, to integrate technologies at commercially-relevant scales, and conduct crosscutting analyses to understand the potential and challenges of an algal biofuel industry that is capable of annually producing billions of gallons of renewable diesel, gasoline, and jet fuels.
  • According to BETO, “Our strategy aims to help break down critical technical barriers and promote sustainable and affordable algal biofuels. The Algae Program’s projects systematically address barriers along the algal biofuel supply chain to help advance the state of technology forward toward demonstrating cost-competitiveness with fossil fuels.”
  • Within the Algae Program, BETO focuses on activities in production, logistics, and algal integrated biorefineries.
