BDI — BioEnergy breaks ground for algae facility

BDI — BioEnergy International AG, a specialized plant engineering company from Styria, Austria, broke ground on January 26, 2018, in the Hartberg Ecopark (Styria) for an industrial plant based on its innovative photobioreactor system for the production of algae biomass.

After years of research, BDI succeeded in developing its proprietary production system and in scaling it up to industrial size. Planning, building and operating its industrial algae production plant marks BDI’s first step into this business sector as raw material producer.

The wholly owned subsidiary BDI — BioLife Science GmbH will produce algae-based raw materials for food supplements, pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries. According to Dr. Edgar Ahn, a member of the Management Board, “We are very proud that we have been able to bring once again a product of our R&D into industrial realization. By building this industrial plant, we can guarantee location-independent and cost-efficient production of valuable, high-quality algae products under optimal, environmental friendly conditions.”

They provide benefits, jobs and thus quality of life,” said Minister of Economic Affairs MMag.a Barbara Eibinger-Miedl. “I am pleased that with the ground breaking ceremony today, the starting signal for an important investment in the future is being made. I am sure this project will further accelerate the development of green technologies in Styria.”
